Hello! I really hope you’re enjoying our Fantasy Favourites Read-a-thon so far. Today, we’ll be talking about the Percy Jackson series and what’s so great about it. There are loads of reasons for why it’s such a popular series, but can you pin it down? Here are some of my favourite things about the books.
Percy has some of the sassiest responses I have ever seen, and I adore each and every one of them. But because I can’t exactly quote the entire series, this little snippet will have to do:
“So Zeus sent this magical flying ram with golden wool, which picked them up in Greece and carried them all the way to Colchis in Asia Minor. Well, actually it carried Cadmus. Europa fell off and died along the way, but that’s not important.”
“It was probably important to her.”
This will never not make me laugh. Attaboy, Percy, attaboy.
“Wow,” Thalia muttered. “Apollo is hot.”
“He’s the sun god,” I said.
“That’s not what I meant.”
This will come as no surprise to anyone who knows a thing about me, but I am utterly and irrevocably in love with Luke. Okay, so about 85% of that is because he’s played by Jake Abel in the movies, but I also just really love his storyline, no matter how much it wrecks me. He is just very misunderstood, okay? I want to feed him cookies and give him a really big hug.
Yes, we’ve covered him.
Luke Luke Luke Luke
ALRIGHT, WE GOT IT.
The chapter titles
I don’t think the chapter titles have escaped anyone’s notice. They’re hilarious and always manage to snag your interest enough so you keep reading. Because you have to know what the hell it means. It also has some really unfortunate titles, such as “My parents go commando”, but they’re usually not as traumatising. Some of my favourites:
- I Become Supreme Overlord of the Bathroom
- We Get Advice From A Poodle
- I Learn How to Grow Zombies
- We Meet the Dragon of Eternal Bad Breath
“With great power . . . comes great need to take a nap.”
When you pick up one of Riordan’s books, you can be certain of one thing and that is that he’ll be able to make you laugh. A lot. You’ll get plenty of action and friendship and a cattle of partying ponies and evil Titans, but you’ll also laugh until your belly hurts. There’s this very natural, very dry, very sassy humour that I simply cannot get enough of.
“The cafe windows wrapped all the way around the observation floor, which gave us a beautiful panoramic view of the skeleton army that had come to kill us.”
Mythology! How cool is mythology? I love how there’s so much Greek mythology and Riordan manages to poke fun at every single myth ever. Of course, there is a lot to make fun of, so plenty of material to use. It’s a great setting and I really love Camp Half-Blood and Mount Olympus.
“Yay! Blow-things-up time!”
Percy’s younger brother Tyson is an absolute babe and I love him to bits. He’s genuinely kind-hearted and only cares about the important things in life, such as peanut butter. He reminds me a little bit of Hagrid, in that they’re both feared creatures but both so warm and sweet.
