Aly & Inge’s Monthly Wrap-Up: July 2016

Posted July 31, 2016 by Both in Wrap-Ups & Unboxings / 5 Comments

Hello!

We’re neck-deep in summer right now and you can tell by the masses of bloody damn mosquitoes that assault me every time I stay still for three seconds. At least it’s cooled down a little! Still, I’m not one for heat – it makes me feel dizzy and I get headaches. I’m more of an autumn person – anyone with me? I hope July’s been a good month for you! Here’s how our July has been.

See, I can have slow reading months, too! That’s quite a difference compared to last month. I mostly blame life, which I will tell you more about in the section below. Still, I finally read Winter and A Court of Mist and Fury thanks to our Fantasy Favourites Read-a-thon, so I feel slightly better about myself.

Well, July has been quite… eventful. I nailed the first four days of Camp NaNoWriMo and then proceeded to crash and burn, which left me with pretty much no energy or will to read. For the first half of July, it seemed like I would be getting no reading done. Fortunately, that’s when our Fantasy Favourites Read-a-thon happened! I sped through Winter and that gave me a kick up the bum.

Then my driving lessons started, a lot sooner than expected, which has been taking the rest of my energy. I feel proud and accomplished for doing this, but it’s a lot to take in and it leaves me exhausted.

I also had my 24th birthday on the 18th! I celebrated this by going to the Harry Potter Exhibition in Brussels, which was… disappointing, to be honest. It was way too hot and way too crowded — you practically swam through the exhibition. The movie costumes were great to see — the detail that went into all these things! But all the props were stashed in glass containers and you had to queue in order to get a good look at them. Didn’t really feel like doing that in the heat. Still, I got to show off some Hufflepuff House pride!

I feel like I might need to sleep for a month. I’ve definitely been kicking anxiety butt, though, so it’s a good tired.

Aly

This month has been a pretty awesome month, mostly because I bowed down to peer pressure and finally started listening to the Hamilton musical.

IT. IS. LIFE CHANGING. I felt things. My eyes leaked strange, salty liquid. My heart stopped and started and then broke into a million tiny pieces. It was a fragile month, what with all the feelings I felt during Ivory & Bone and then my Throne of Glass rereads. I spent a lot of time walking around, mumbling to myself, clutching the cavity in my chest where my heart used to be.

But yes: Hamilton. EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU HAS TO LISTEN TO IT. I am yet again appalled that I do not live in the US and will not have the privilege of watching it before it comes to the UK… at some point.

Also, July has been the month of slumps. Ever since the Fantasy Favorites Readathon ended, I’ve been struggling to pick up and read other books or even reviewing them. I started Stalking Jack the Ripper and realized I needed something a little more fantasy, so started A Torch Against the Night and quickly realized that wasn’t doing it for me either. Instead, all I wanted to do was reread Sarah J Maas books and cry over my broken heart and poor fictional babies. They go through so much. *wipes away tears*

I hope next month will be more productive!

What’s your best memory from July?

  1. Yeay for kicking anxiety’s butt, Inge. I hope your driving lessons are going well.

And I hope your reading slump will go away Aly. They always suck.

  2. Happy (late) birthday, Inge! I hope your day was beautiful apart from the slightly disappointing HP exhibition – there is no one who deserves it more than you. <3 And Aly, seconded @ Hamilton love. I am so very glad you've joined the Train Of Tears… I've listened to "It's Quiet Uptown" more times than I can count and still (STILL) I cry every single damn time. It is an issue, only not really, because tbh I love it too much to care. 😉

  3. I am so late to this post but YAY HAMILTON and GO YOU, Inge. 😀 I’m sorry the exhibit was disappointing, but I’m proud of you for going! And 24, gosh you’re old. With my youthful 23 years, I just cannot comprehend an age such as this. I totally get you on needing to convert everyone to Hamilton, Aly haha. I made my roommate sing the songs with me even though she hasn’t even listened to the musical in total. 😀
