Of Wonderland Book Club: January 2017 #OWBookClub

Hello, dear Wonderlings, and welcome to the new year!

A new year comes with positive resolutions, new chances, new opportunities, and of course the OF WONDERLAND BOOK CLUB! We are so, so excited to finally start this project and we can’t wait to talk books with you. (And by that we mean even more than we already do.)

What’s different about the #OWBookClub?

Weeeeeell, instead of choosing a single book every month, we decided to choose a category instead. This can range from genres to more specific things, but always general enough to give you some play room. We didn’t want to send you to the bookstore to keep up every single month (although if you do need an excuse to go to the bookstore, here it is!), but rather we wanted you to be able to choose a book you may already own. This way, we’re hoping that #OWBookClub is available to everyone.

On the first of every month, we will put up a post (this post!) to announce the new topic for every month. In that same post, we’ll also add a poll with options for the next month. We want you to feel like this is YOUR book club. You call the shots.

To get things started, we have decided on January’s prompt, as well as February’s options. After this, we are leaving things in your hands.

For now, it’s time to announce January’s prompt!

It iiiiiiiiiiis…

*drum roll*

Fantasy!

… Wow, didn’t see that one coming, did you? Honestly, who is surprised? Not me.

So yeah, fantasy may seem like a pretty obvious prompt, but I feel like it’s the perfect one to get us all started! It’s a pretty generous and comprehensive topic, so you can go all out with this. This can be any type of fantasy: high fantasy, epic fantasy, urban fantasy, as long as stuff’s made up. You can start talking by using the hashtag #OWBookClub or use the comment section below. Which book are you reading? When are you reading it? Do you need a reading buddy? Maybe some chocolate and a pillow to drown your tears in? The hashtag is open to any and all discussions (which is to say, do keep it civil, but I believe in you guys)!

Don’t forget to leave a vote in the poll below!

If you’d like to have a say in future polls and prompts, leave some suggestions as well. The options are pretty much infinite. If you can think of it, we can do it. Examples are: over 400 pages, mental health, fictional worlds, contemporary, favourite re-reads, sci fi, dystopia, blue covers… Seriously, go all out.

Happy reading! Which book did you choose?

  1. I love the idea of this book club, bbies. What are some of your suggestions for this month’s prompt? Would love to see your TBR’s!

    • I know I’m reading Rebel of the Sands and Ella is reading Caraval!

I recommend: Croak by Gina Damico, Heartless by Marissa Meyer, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, First Year by Rachel E. Carter, The School of Good and Evil by Soman Chainani. ♥

  2. Cait @ Paper Fury

I’m really glad that you’re doing a food category as a potential for your next club prompt. That’s the kind of quality book category I think all book clubs should work with.😂

    • Excellent choice! The four of us are currently buddy reading the Harry Potter series, we’re on Chamber of Secrets 😀 happy new year, Kyra! Hope the new year brings you awesome things.

    • Excellent choice, Ashley! I can’t wait for A Conjuring of Light. I’ve actually been meaning to reread ADSOM! It’s such a great world, solid characters, awesome magic system. Plenty to love.

  3. OMG! I have got a bunch of fantasy on my TBR like Frostblood, An Ember in the Ashes, The neverending story and Throne of Glass. I’m sure I can start one this month. just need to decide which.
I’ll probably start by next week.. I just need to remember the hashtag!

  4. This sounds so great! And since I’m really trying to cut down my TBR Pile in my bookshelves, I’m going to join in on the fun! 🙂 I’m going on a vacation tomorrow so I haven’t decided which Fantasy Book I’m going to read for this, but I’ve got so many I don’t see this as a problem for when I come back.

  5. Hi! I’m really excited about this book club! I’m usually terrible about keeping up with book clubs but I think this one will work out a lot better for me because I could probably find something already on my shelf. Fantasy worked out great for me because I’m currently reading The Mad Ship by Robin Hobb which is really long, and at the rate I’ve been reading will probably take me all month.

I voted for badass females, because, well, was I ever going to choose anything else? Lol.

    • Robin Hobb seems to be this queen of fantasy, yet I’ve never read a book by her! Always seem to be such big books as well. Anyway, I hope you like it, even if it takes you all month!

  6. Hahaha, for badass females, I already have a book in mind! My sister bought “Etiquette & Espionage” a while back from Scholastic. Can’t wait to read it and share with you guys!

    • That sounds wicked! I have a book in mind as well, the third book in the Spinster Club series by Holly Bourne. It’s really feminist and so good. But the poll results are pretty close 😀
