Veronica Speedwell returns in a brand new adventure from Deanna Raybourn, the "New York Times" bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries... "London, 1887." Victorian adventuress and butterfly hunter Veronica Speedwell receives an invitation to visit the Curiosity Club, a ladies-only establishment for daring and intrepid women. There she meets the mysterious Lady Sundridge, who begs her to take on an impossible task saving society art patron Miles Ramsforth from execution. Accused of the brutal murder of his artist mistress Artemisia, Ramsforth will face the hangman s noose in a week s time if Veronica cannot find the real killer. But Lady Sundridge is not all that she seems, and unmasking her true identity is only the first of the many secrets Veronica must uncover. Together with her natural historian colleague Stoker, Veronica races against time to find the true murderer a ruthless villain who not only took Artemisia s life in cold blood but is happy to see Ramsforth hang for the crime. From a Bohemian artists colony to a royal palace to a subterranean grotto with a decadent history, the investigation proves to be a very perilous undertaking indeed...."
.) I can not put into words how full but empty my heart felt after finishing A PERILOUS UNDERTAKING. I felt like bawling my eyes out…but couldn’t because my heart just felt too sore! WHAT EVEN IS THIS FEELING I HATE IT. This is a book I would’ve LOVED to have written. I don’t wish for that often as I’m normally always content with the fact that another person wrote a book I loved, but with A PERILOUS UNDERTAKING, I felt so JEALOUS after I’d finished it and completely envious of the author’s brain.
.) I love Veronica so, so much. I want to BE Veronica! She’s just so amazing and clever and definitely one of the most interesting and multi-dimensional book characters I’ve ever read about! Her wry sense of humour is absolutely golden and the snark that goes on between her and Stoker makes me fangirl SO HARD. <3 I also loved Veronica because I saw parts of her that I see in myself but also parts that I would like to see in myself.
.) Also let me gush about Stoker who is the most priceless and adorable grumpy wee potato EVER. I love Stoker. I WANT a Stoker. My favourite thing about Stoker was just the fact of how RESPECTFUL he is towards Veronica. Yes they both throw insults back and forth, but Stoker always, always respected Veronica’s decisions and choices in whatever she did, even if he himself didn’t think they were a good idea. I loved seeing his supportive behaviour as I am SO tired of guys in books – particularly historical fiction/romance – who just think that they know more then women and that women are weaker then them. The fact that Stoker didn’t just say that he was there for Veronica but also demonstrated it by helping Veronica when she wanted it and let her be when she didn’t WAS SO LOVELY. Also the humour is absolutely priceless! Veronica and Stoker’s snark with each other had me laughing till I had a stitch. 😀
.) THE NO ROMANCE/SEXUAL TENSION KILLLED ME. I was a mushroom cloud of emotion waiting to explode while reading the book, and what happened??? NOTHING HAPPENED DAMMIT! So much sexual tension and dirty quips AND JUST OPPORTUNITIES that were begging for a romance to blossom…BUT NOTHING. BLOODY. HAPPENED. I could’ve cried with the disappointment if I wasn’t so wrung out from everything else that happened in the book! I understand why the author drew it out and put up plot twists to drag it out even longer BUT STILL. There is going to be a third book (which I don’t know when is coming out!!!!) so hopefully then STUFF WILL HAPPEN.
.) I can’t honestly say if I loved A PERILOUS UNDERTAKING more than the first book, A CURIOUS BEGINNING! Both so are so different that I’m completely stuck when it comes to picking a favourite between them! At the moment, I think it might be this book, but I’m not sure…
.) Even though I had a good idea who the bad guy in the book was, the mystery was so enjoyable and had so many twists and turns, I was impressed. I really enjoyed how deftly Deanna Raybourn weaved the thrilling mystery around the characters and their own personal story arcs. I also felt like the mystery in here was better then it was in the first book, so I’m so excited to see if mystery in the third book is even better then the one in here!
.) I would give ANYTHING to be able to read both books again for the first time. T_T This series has become one of my favourite book series of all time and I adore it so much. I can’t wait for the third book!! I have my fingers and toes crossed that it’s even better then the first two books in the trilogy put together!
