Of Wonderland Book Club: January 2018 + Giveaway!

Posted January 1, 2018 by Inge in #OWBookClub, Features / 25 Comments

Welcome to the Of Wonderland Book Club, where we choose monthly themes instead of a single title. These themes can range from genres to more specific prompts (e.g. fantasy, badass female characters), but will always be broad enough to give you some play room. We didn’t want to send you to the bookstore every month, but rather we wanted you to be able to choose a book you may already own. This way, we’re hoping that #OWBookClub is accessible to everyone.

Our book club is officially a year old! To celebrate our first anniversary and the milestone of 500 members on our Goodreads group, we are hosting a giveaway! More info at the bottom of the post.

December’s theme was must finish before 2018, so we hope you’ve managed to clear some overdue books off your shelves! I read Norse Mythology, which was interesting, and This Savage Song, which was badass and typical Schwab. I wasn’t in the mood for Wonder Woman and didn’t want that to affect my rating, so it’s been put on the backburner for now. But I will get to it!

So WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW YEAR! You have voted vigorously, and your new theme is…

You when you pick up a hyped book

Hyped books! It seems like no one will ever shut up about these books, and you’re getting kind of curious, but you’re afraid you’ll be the only one who doesn’t like it… Will you fall for the hype? I will be reading Illuminae (reread because OBSIDIO IS COMING OUT SOON AHH) and The Golem and the Jinni.

We have, of course, two handfuls of recommendations for you. Here are some books that we often find ourselves shouting about:

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue // Turtles All the Way Down // The Martian // A Darker Shade of Magic // Sleeping Giants
Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda // All the Light We Cannot See // I’ll Give You the Sun // Falling Kingdoms // Me Before You

You will find even more recommendations on our Goodreads group. We also have a new feature: buddy reads! This means that we will be closing the theme poll a little sooner, and open up a new poll to figure out which books in that theme we can read together as a group. This feature is entirely optional and doesn’t take away the option to read any book you want! We simply hope this will encourage discussion and make you feel like you’re reading together. It’s still on trial — we’d just like to try it out and see if you like it.

But what about a new poll, eh? What would you like to read in February?

Alright, you’ve come this far. It’s time for me to spew some information about this giveaway. To celebrate our first anniversary and 500+ members on our Goodreads group, We are giving away a book of choice to three lucky winners! This giveaway is international as long as The Book Depository or Wordery ship to your country. Thank you for reading with us!

Happy reading! What will you be reading?

  1. I only just found out about your book club, but I can’t wait to join in, starting this month. I love that your book club is based around a theme, rather than a book – I think it makes it inviting and fun, a chance for everyone to join in no matter what you read or where you live. A year late to the party, I’m glad to have found it and wish you congrats on a year of hosting!

  2. Totally failed to participate in the book club in 2017. I’m hoping to do better in the new year. If I can get back to the group, I will try to discuss my experience reading Fallen Kingdoms this month, and perhaps look up to see what else you lovely ladies recommended on there. Happy New Year, bbies.

Good work ladies! I have enjoyed the past few months on GR with you and am happy to see the group evolving and how you adapt to our sighs and wishes. I will be joining the buddy read of The Raven Boys for this theme.

  4. Monique

I found out about this book club two weeks ago and ready to dive in! I’ll be reading The Legend series by Marie Lu! Happy new year!

  5. I’m finally going to try to participate this year! Last year was just too much. I like that I don’t have to read a specific book – I really don’t like being told what to read. 😂

  6. I’VE BEEN SO BEHIND ON BLOGGING AND BOOKS THAT I DIDN’T KNOW YOU HAVE A BOOK CLUB! I just joined the GR group and I’m so excited for this month’s theme! I haven’t read Illuminae yet but I have a copy (two copies, actually) on my shelf! But I might go with WARCROSS this month (Marie Lu). Thank you for the generous giveaway, Inge! <3

I also just found out, but I like the idea of thematic reads and recommendations. I’ve always been a lone reader, so I’m curious to see how this thing works!!

  8. Hey! I’m a newbie in the GR group and I absolutely love that it’s not as restricted as other groups, I think the monthly themes are very cool and allow every member to read whatever they want as long as it fits. 😀

Thanks for notifying me. I’m really not good in those kinds of things but I hope I’ll have lots of fun in this bookclub. BTW I didn’t know you had a site!!

  10. I am new to the book club! I love the voting of themes and the sharing. The buddy reads are awesome too! I think that I will join in on the Mistborn buddy read that just started since I just began reading it as well!
